Monterey Jazz Festival Performance
" Another highlight [of the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra Performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival]: [James] Francies and vocalist Brianna Rancour-Ibarra set the mood with a lovely version of Jimmy Rowles‘s pointillist standard “The Peacocks”; the loving attention they lavished on the tune was decisively endorsed by Lovano’s marvelous solo statement." Brianna performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival this past weekend, as well as various local spots in Monterey County with the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. She sang with her fellow musicians of the orchestra as well as one of the most famous and respected jazz legends of all time, Joe Lovano, who improvised on the haunting tune that Brianna sang called "Peacocks" by Jimmy Rowles. She got the chance to meet many jazz legends and new jazz artists including Wayne Shorter (who, in this interview, is talking to Brianna mostly), Joe Lovano, Brian Blade, Judie Solvano, and Charlie Hunter.
Press on this event from KUSP Radio This event also received radio and newspaper coverage from various sites. Here's a comment from the program "But Can She Play", a program supporting and advocating women in jazz. "Music LA student Brianna Rancour-Ibarra was part of our 2011 Youth Jazz Clinic in L.A. featuring the Hailey Niswanger Quartet. Ran into the young vocalist after her performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival with the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. And she's offered to help pull together another clinic with #bcsp. LOVE her enthusiasm, and thrilled to be a part of a vibrant new generation of jazz! " Top photo: JDayton Middle Photo: Robert Holt/JazzWest.com Bottom Photo: MJF/56 poster |
